Three workshops for Spring 2018

Sunday January 21st – Introductory Musical Improv Workshop

No automatic alt text available.Love music? Love improv? Wish you could combine the two? If the answer to any of those questions is ‘yes’ come and join for an introductory musical improv workshop. Three workshops for Spring 2016

February 13th/14th – The Harold

Get to grips with this classic Improv structure, created and perfected by Del Close, and thriving in Chicago and all over the world today.

Learn the structure, the techniques and the moves that empower a group of improvisers to create stunning longform improvised theatre from a single audience suggestion.

Run by Jon Trevor, founder of Box Of Frogs.

Blue Orange Theatre – Full weekend.  £60. Suitable for those with some experience

March 5th/6th – Playback Theatre

Plays of Our Lives present a two day workshop delving into our stories exploring techniques of playback theatre.

Playback theatre is a unique form of improv with storytelling at it’s core. Audience members are invited share their stories and watch them become theatre on the spot.

In this weekend they will explore the main forms, techniques and ritual of playback in a fun and nurturing environment. Topics covered include;

– Listening to a story and finding its core.
– How to turn a story into a play and how to play with a story
– Music and singing in playback
– Creative metaphor in stories
– Find the hero’s journey in every story

Everyone is welcome at all levels of experience.

Sharing our stories empowers us as individuals and a collective.

We are looking forward to an inspiring, empowering super-fun spontaneous weekend.

Run by Victoria Howden and Jane Beavis of Plays Of Our Lives

Blue Orange Theatre – Full weekend.  £80.

May 21st/22nd – Musical Longform

Ten Thousand Million Love Stories

Box of Frogs is thrilled to announce that The fabulous Heather Urqurhart (Best Female Performer, Brighton Festival and Fringe Awards 2013) and Jules Munns (“Improv’s answer to Hugh Grant”) are bringing their unique Improvised Two-Hander show to Birmingham for just one night.

Love Stories Square
Ten Thousand Million Love Stories – a show about love, what it means and how we succeed and fail in it.
“The perfect balance between realism and comedy slapstick, these two comfortably jumped from one character to another, without ever losing their flow. The show was as funny as it was impressive” Brighton’s Finest
“Clever, complicated, and relevant, made by people who practise a lot, and have the kind of spirit which drives them to do what terrifies most people. Like making up an entire play on the spot. And not just a play, but an interesting creative adventurous play, that isn’t like any scripted work I’ve ever seen. Could this be the future of comedy?” Fringe Guru
Preceded by the “Fancy Pants Jam” The Fancy-Pants Mashup is a delight for both the audience and the improvisers participating in it. Improvisers who have never met, perform together, having no idea who they will be paired with before they greet each other onstage. The lights go down, and BAM! COMEDY!
It’s like blind dating, except replace the dating part with comedy. AND everyone is dressed fancy. This, we’re assured, is the key to the whole thing. NOTE: Fancy attire is not required for audience members…but it is highly encouraged!

Saturday March 1st for one night only.  Blue Orange Theatre, Birmingham Tickets just £8/£6  For more information and to book contact The Blue Orange Theatre

Three great workshops heading this way…

Leap into action with the Frogs – three weekend workshops in May, June and July.

Come and play with Box of Frogs at the Blue Orange Theatre!

Saturday May 25th.

Truthfulness In Improv with Klaus Peter Schreiner.

Klaus says “In this workshop we emphasize the creation of truthful stories. How can we make the audience care about the characters? How can we use emotions to make the narration credible? How can we use truthfulness to entertain? Often improvisation theatre simply tries to be funny, but there are so many more ways it can be used to captivate an audience. This will be practised in a highly motivational and fun atmosphere encouraging improvisers to explore their skills of expressing emotion.”

More about Klaus at £30.  (Not for beginners.)

Saturday June 29th/Sunday June 30th.

Musical Improv – with Heather Urquhart and Joe Samuel of The Maydays.

Heather and Joe say “A weekend dedicated to all aspects of music, singing and comedy.  Heather and Joe will take you through a vast range of singing styles, song structures, exercises and games.  Really useful for those who want to give it a go but need a safe environment to let their musical hair down.  Petrified?  Don’t worry, by the time you leave you will be ready to sing in front of anyone!”

A real treat, lots of learning and bags of fun. More info on Heather and Joe at £85 for the weekend. Open to everyone. Book soon – places will go fast!

Saturday July 13th.

TwoProv with Lloydie

Lloydie of MissImp in Nottingham will be looking at how to create extended scenes/stories with just two people.

£20. (Not for beginners.)

All workshops will take place at the Blue Orange Theatre. Places allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

“Lavish Historical Drama”

Here is footage of the fabulous two part “Lavish Historical Drama” from the Airplay show at the Blue Orange on April 13th.  Well done to all involved!

(There were all kinds of technical issues with the sound, which I won’t bother you with, but the upshot is that quality is variable, and the sync sometimes wanders, but I thought better to upload than not, so here it is.)

Frogs Storm Salford

Last weekend a Knot of Frogs (one of the official collective terms, apparently) headed up to Salford to challenge 7 other teams in Manchester’s THIRD Annual Comedy Improv Tournament.  It’s only our third attempt to take part in competitive Improv, and unsuprisingly we didn’t win – or place, or survive the heat to be truthful.

But we did perform well, held our collective heads up high, had enormous fun, learned lots, and took home a bunch of new games to play on a Tuesday night.  Thanks ComedySportz for having us, and to all the Frogs who gave up their Sunday to take part.

Frogs at the Festival

What a great gig at the Blue Orange last night! Thanks to all the Froggies who took part.

Lots of laughs from lots of old favourites.  But also some gallant attempts at brand new games and formats – “One Voice Interview”, a format stolen shamelessly off the internet, proved to be a crowd pleaser and definitely worth keeping in the repertoire.  And “Meanwhile”, dreamed up in the bath a few weeks ago, held the audience rapt for 15 minutes, produced some really funny scenes, and a couple of moments of genuinely moving drama.

Thanks to the Blue Orange for hosting us, and the Comedy Festival for publicising the show.
Now roll on Bread and Circus on Wednesday.

And on Sunday 14th October, at 7pm, we will be bringing more hi-octane improvised comedy nonsense to the Blue Orange stage.  A full-evening of made-up entertainment based entirely on audience suggestions.  Unrehearsed, and improvised entirely live. No-one knows what will happen, least of all us!  Expect to be amazed, expect the unexpected   – but most of all expect to laugh!  £5.  Book direct from the Blue Orange (click on link and follow the trail to The Studio).

Let them have Bread and Circus!

Last night saw the first evening of Bread and Circus from Box of Frogs.  Best described as Improv meets Tombola, we have created a night where the line between performer and audience is irretrevably blurred!

For two hours we drew names out of a hat, and people went up and peformed their favourite Improv games and scenes.

This was more like a jam session in the back room of a jazz club than a show.  The audience was warm and supportive, the players felt secure in taking risks, and some brand new improv virgins got up and had a go.

Watch this space to see how Bread and Circus grows….

East Meets West (Midlands)

On the 24th of September the Box of Frogs had a visitation from the mystic East.  Actually it was from Nottinghamshire.  But that is East of Birmingham.  And it wasn’t an “it” it was Llyodie.  So really I’m talking rubbish, which was one of the activities  Llyodie from Miss Imp had us doing, along with meeting Big Bubba, discovering what was Up My Butt and hearing the shocking news that Mrs McGinty had died.  A good time was had by all (apart from Mrs McGinty) and we hope to see Llyodie back in the Big Heart of England soon.

Froggy Request Night

Dear Froggies All

But more than that – tonight is Froggy request night!

Bring along suggestions of your favourite games to play, and your wishes will come true.  Yippee!

 See you there

It’s nearly Tuesday again…

Tomorrow night is Tuesday night, which means it’s Frogs’ Night. Is it a Jam Session or a Workshop. You know what? I can’t tell the difference any more – and it would seem that neither can most of you. So let’s just call it Frogs’ Night.

See you there!

Last Week’s Jam

Not sure what type of jam you’d call it, but it was downright tasty and of the highest quality.  After some rude distractions on a fruity theme we got on to endowments and liberated the inherent comedy force to be found inside an anvil.  I never knew there was so much in it. We also discovered the delights of pimping to the max (she said while trying to pluck a chicken).

Probably homemade spiced raspberry with the little paper dolly on the lid.

Unless you think sitting on the sofa is more fun….

Tomorrow night is Jam Night. Come along if you want to play impro games and have fun!

Message ends.

Another week, another Jam

Dear Froggies All

Tomorrow Night (19th July) is Jam Night! Yaaay!

This means we will be playing many fun games and having lots of goes at no-doubt very silly scenes. No-one else has volunteered to run it, so you’ll be getting me. But if you have something you want to try out, bring it along.

Last week’s performance at the Lamp Tavern was great. Next one on August 10th. Come and play!

…”oh what a night”…

Last night Birmingham witnessed another appearance of that rarest of creatures, the many headed Box Frog. Mind you, sightings are getting more common.  We played some new games, made some real discoveries (I’m sorry, what did you say…?) and a good time was had by all.

Some of you will have heard me say that I retreated from the world of scripted work because I stopped getting nervous before a performance (so, therefore, what was the point…? ).  The last couple of performances I’ve done with Box of Frogs I have got nervous beforehand.  The first time at The Lamp I got very nervous beforehand.  But that was probably just the coffee (feed me caffeine and watch me fly…).  Last night at The Lamp I just got excited beforehand.  I was “delightedly anticipating” the fun I was going to have.  And, do you know what?  I think the audience had fun too, which was nice.

Come on Baby, Light my Lamp…

Weds 13th July sees the return of Those Box of Frogs Brothers (and a sister!) for another FREE night of making it up as we go along at The Lamp Tavern, Digbeth.  If I was you, I’d catch us while it’s still free, because sooner or later we’re going to have to follow The Joker’s advice:

“If you’re good at something, never do it for free”.

I think he was talking about spreading madness and chaos, so obviously that’s completely different to us…

“You Can’t Win At Improv”

Here’s a video that I recently saw (thanks MissImp, Notts). It’s a speech at an American college graduation ceremony by Stephen Colbert. Some interesting observations on Impro at 16’50” (tho the rest is pretty good too!).

The Frog is Swelling!

Box of Frogs is getting bigger and better.  Tuesday nights are heaving, and the vibe is great.  Last night’s session was a doozie – mucho laughter, mucho learning.  So much so, that we have decided to move back to meeting every Tuesday, rather than fortnightly.

The plan is that we will alternate Jam Nights with Workshop Nights.  See the Who Are We? page for more details of what that means.

See you there!

Who’s Afraid of the Big, Bad Frog?

Last Tuesday’s Box of Frogs was big, I mean BIG!  The largest turn out for yonks – word is obviously spreading of the fun you can have for only £4 on a Tuesday night in Moseley.  Matt Vaughn Wilson led us through a bit of Bunny Bunny and the ever popular Zip Zap Boing before moving on to a mix of new games and old favorites.  I can definitely see Emo Date making it into the set on the 8th June…

Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

It’s True, It’s Actual…

The date has been set – Weds 8th June, 8pm at The Lamp Tavern, Digbeth. The Box of Frogs is being opened, live onstage.  A forty minute, FREE performance of Improv – featuring old hands and newbies alike.  A bit of a laugh and a pint (or two) – what more could you ask for?

Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

May the Tenth be With You

Another good session last Tuesday – our collective approach to taking it in turns to lead seems to be turning out fine, with each person bringing something new and different.  With three newbies and one long lost friend on Tuesday it made sense to start by introducing each other, despite being a bit forgetful.  Then a quick Wish Wash before going on to telling lots of stories.  And not only were there beginings and middles, ends all develloped quite naturally, too.  Given the content, I wonder if that’s how soap writers get their ideas?

So, thanks to Kerry Murdock.  Tuesday 24 May sees Matt Vaughan Wilson take up the Staff of Office and the Cash Box of Fortune.

More Froggie Fun

Calling all Froggies – this Tuesday 10th May join us for more Froggie Fun at St Columba’s Church Centre from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.  A chance to fine tune your fast reactions and empty your heads with Kerry Murdock at the helm.  Remember, it don’t mean a thing if it isn’t made up as you go along.

Are the Frogs coming out of their Box?

Performances are being mooted.  Possibly only to the Great and Good in the first instance (ie people we can persuade turn up and watch us make fools of ourselves).  Watch this space…
